Aging Partners will launch a series of free digital literacy workshops this fall to help older adults navigate technology such as smartphones, tablets and laptops.

The one-on-one sessions are scheduled for Sept. 23, Oct. 15, and Nov. 12 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at Victory Park, 600 S. 70th St. Each session pairs seniors with University of Nebraska students, who provide personalized guidance on topics ranging from downloading apps to sending photos.

Beth Schuster, supervisor for Community Activities Services at Aging Partners, said the program’s value extends beyond technical skills.

“Some of the questions we get are as simple as how to send a picture to a daughter or download one from an email,” Schuster said. “For many grandparents, texting or sharing photos is the only way their grandkids will respond, so being able to connect that way is really important.”

Schuster said most participants bring smartphones, though students also assist with iPads and laptops. Past workshops have helped seniors with everything from navigating sports ticket apps to recovering passwords on shared devices.

The initiative, Schuster added, benefits both generations. “It’s very intergenerational programming. Students enjoy the one-on-one interaction and feel like they’re making a difference, and seniors walk away with more confidence,” she said.

Workshops are free, but registration is required by calling Aging Partners at 402-441-7158. An informational session on digital safety, led by the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office, will also be held Sept. 16 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at Victory Park.
