Believe it or not, election season 2026 is right around the corner.

While local election offices are preparing for forthcoming primaries and mid-term elections, Tuesday, Sept. 16, is National Voter Registration Day.

The Lancaster County Election Commission will conduct four special voter registration drives in observance of the holiday, which “is designed to educate the public on the importance of registering to vote… especially new voters who are turning 18 this year,” Lancaster County Election Commissioner Todd Wiltgen told KLIN News.

“It’s also an opportunity to remind voters who may have moved or want to change their party affiliation, this is a great day to get their registration updated ahead of next year’s primary election, which will be a partisan primary,” Wiltgen added. ”

Eligible residents of Nebraska who will be 18 on or before November 4, 2025, has moved, changed their name, or would like to change their political party affiliation, may register to vote on Tuesday, September 16th, at the following times and locations:

  • 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM
    Anderson Library (3635 Touzalin Avenue)
Walt Library (6701 South 14th Street)
  • 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM
    Eiseley Library (1530 Superior Street)
Gere Library (2400 South 56th Street)

Citizens may also register to vote at the Election Commission Office (601 North 46th Street, Lincoln), open weekdays from 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM.

Voter registration is also available online if a voter has a valid Nebraska Driver’s License or State Identification card at ne.gov/go/NeReg2Vote.

Individuals may also register to vote through the mail. Mail-in forms are available at most post offices, banks, and libraries. Registration forms are also available on the Election Commissioner’s web site which may be printed and mailed to the office. Visit lancaster.ne.gov/election for more information.

The Lancaster County Election Commission has received seven fraudulent voter registration forms in recent weeks and has referred them to the Lincoln Police Department for further investigation.

While these are isolated incidents involving one individual and not related to a larger conspiracy, Commissioner Wiltgen is concerned it may encourage similar attempts to perpetrate voter registration fraud.

“We have procedures in place to verify the validity of every voter registration form we process” said Commissioner Wiltgen. “I would advise individuals not to test the system.”

When voter registration fraud is suspected, it will be referred to the appropriate law enforcement agency. Providing false information on a voter registration form is a Class IV felony. The penalty is up to two years of imprisonment and twelve months post-release supervision, a fine of up to $10,000, or both.

Individuals who have questions should contact the Election Commissioner’s Office at (402) 441-7311.
