The University of Nebraska–Lincoln Police Department has added a new K-9 to its ranks.

Dodger, a 23-month-old Malinois mix, is now certified in explosives detection and is already helping keep campus events safe. Dodger joined UNLPD in May and completed six weeks of training with the Lincoln Police Department’s K-9 program before earning certification July 24.

He now works alongside Sgt. Anderson Delgado, who has been a K-9 handler since 2019.

“We condition our dogs in environments with people, loud noises, and distractions,” Delgado said. “By preserving that bond, it keeps the dog focused on me when it’s time to work.”

Dodger can identify 19 explosive-related scents, as well as the odors of firearms and ammunition. He and another K-9 Gida, also a Malinois mix, will sweep facilities for athletic games, concerts, and other large events.

UNLPD has maintained two K-9 teams since 2017. Delgado said building trust and limiting socialization with the public helps the dogs stay focused on their work. Most explosives-trained dogs can serve for eight to 10 years.

“This was definitely a new experience for me,” Delgado said. “During the first week of training with Dodger, I questioned myself if I had made the right decision. But he was a fast learner and quickly picked up on the odors I needed him to detect.”

Dodger was purchased from Southern Coast K9 in Florida, which imports Malinois bred for police work from Hungary. Before joining UNLPD, he had no formal training, which Delgado said is often preferred.
