Nebraska’s Move-Over Law Expands to All Vehicles, Pedestrians

On Wednesday Nebraska’s Move-Over law expanded and the Nebraska State Patrol is alerting drivers about the changes.  Previously, the move-over law applied only to all emergency and roadside assistance vehicles.  Nebraska State Patrol spokesman Cody Thomas says now drivers must slow down and move over when approaching all stopped vehicles and vulnerable road users on the side of the highway.

“That could include people on bicycles or pedestrians or ever agriculture equipment in some of the areas where they travel from field to field.”  Thomas says drivers who may not be able to safely move over should slow down.

“This is really about showing a little extra courtesy to those people who are in a vulnerable situation parked on the side of the road, or in some cases, pedestrians or bicyclists who may be using the side of the road.”

Thomas says troopers have issued more than 100 citations this year to drivers for failing to move over.  “With about four months left in this year, we’ve almost hit the total we had in all of 2024.”  He tells KLIN News they’ve already eclipsed the numbers troopers saw in 2022 and 2023.
