Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Midlands Launches Bold Recruitment Drive

By Tom Stanton Sep 3, 2025 | 6:30 AM

In an effort to address the growing need for male mentors in Lincoln, Omaha and several other communities, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Midlands is kicking off an urgent and ambitious recruitment campaign.

It’s called “60 Men in 60 Days,” and the organization is calling on men from all backgrounds to step up and make a life-changing difference.  BBBSM says dozens of boys are waiting for a “Big Brother”

Over 70% of the youth waiting for a mentor are boys, with some waiting over a year and a half for a match. On average, the organization says male youth face an eight-month wait time. The campaign aims to fill the gap by recruiting 60 male mentors by October 30.

Chief Executive Officer Nichole Turgeon says one-to-one matches between Bigs and Littles support the critical, social, and emotional development needed to help youth realize their potential and strengthen the community.

“We carefully make our matches based on numerous factors to ensure each Big and Little has a strong foundation to stand on,” Turgeon says. “Our one-to-one matches positively impact our
Littles and their families.  We’re not just matchmakers. We are your biggest supporters.”

BBBSM accepts mentors from Lancaster, Douglas, Sarpy, Cass, Saunders, Washington, Seward, Pottawattamie and Mills Counties.  The mentor and mentee meet at least four hours a month in the community to enjoy activities they both find meaningful and fun.
