Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium announced the death of Star, an 8-year-old red panda who had become a favorite among visitors and staff since her arrival in 2023.
Henry Doorly said Thursday in a social media post that Star began experiencing seizures Saturday morning and was immediately taken to the zoo’s animal hospital. Despite what the zoo described as “exhaustive diagnostic measures and supportive care,” she passed away peacefully Sunday morning.
Known as mellow and quick to learn, the zoo says Star eagerly participated in daily training and delighted her caretakers with her love of fruit treats.
“She has always been – and will always be – a bright light in our Zoo,” the zoo said. “We welcome you to celebrate the joy Star brought to so many and share your stories and sympathies in the wake of her passing.”
Zoo officials thanked the dedication of their animal health and care teams, noting their focus on the wellbeing and dignity of the animals in their care.
