The Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department is urging residents to take precautions Friday, August 8, as the National Weather Service issues a heat advisory from 1 to 8 p.m. Heat index values could reach up to 107 degrees.
Officials say anyone can suffer heat-related illness, but young children, older adults, pregnant people, those with certain medical conditions, outdoor workers, and people without air conditioning are at higher risk.
Recommendations include limiting outdoor activity to cooler hours, wearing loose, light-colored clothing, staying hydrated, and using cooling centers such as city libraries, recreation centers, and senior centers. Pets should also have access to shade and fresh water, and should never be left in vehicles.
Signs of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, nausea, dizziness, and fatigue. Heat stroke can cause confusion, loss of consciousness, and a body temperature above 103 degrees. Anyone experiencing heat stroke symptoms should seek immediate medical help.
