After a stretch of milder weather, heat and humidity have returned to southeast Nebraska with temperatures climbing back into the 90s Thursday and Friday.

“We’re seeing heat indices around 100 to 103 Thursday and up to 105 on Friday,” said Laurel McCoy, lead meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Omaha.

A break in the heat is expected this weekend as a weather system brings potential for strong storms Friday night into Saturday morning. McCoy said hail, strong winds, and heavy rainfall are the primary hazards with the approaching system.

Once the front passes, highs will drop back into the 80s for the weekend. As Lincoln Public Schools return to session next week, the forecast calls for seasonal conditions with highs in the mid to upper 80s and chances for nighttime thunderstorms.

“It’s going to be fairly typical weather for summer,” McCoy said.
