Lincoln residents will have multiple opportunities this week to commemorate Juneteenth, the nation’s oldest celebration marking the end of slavery in the United States.
On Thursday, June 20, the International Quilt Museum will host “Weaving Together Our Common Threads: Juneteenth Reflections” from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Artists Chawne Kimber and Celeste Butler of Omaha will share insights on their textile art, life experiences, and hopes for the future. The event is free and open to the public, with refreshments provided. The museum is located at 1523 N. 33rd Street on UNL’s East Campus.
Then on Saturday, June 21, the Malone Center invites the community to its annual Juneteenth celebration from 12 to 3 p.m. at Woods Park (J Street & S 33rd Street). The event will feature free food, community booths, and family-friendly activities. Music will be provided by DJ D-Luv of Red 94.5.
Juneteenth not only marks a historic milestone, but also honors the ongoing fight for justice, freedom, and dignity for Black Americans. Both events aim to celebrate culture, community, and reflection.
