A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for a large swath of Nebraska, covering 65 different counties, including Lancaster.

The watch is in effect until 12:00 a.m. midnight Tuesday, June 17, and National Weather Service Meteorologist Chris Franks estimates the highest chances of weather impacts will come around 9-10 p.m.

“We’re going to see these showers and thunderstorms kind of form in northern and northeast Nebraska, and they’re going to slowly drop south with time,” said Franks. “They’re going to move south, and it’ll be more of an evening chance, and then continuing on right into overnight.”

Franks says the Lincoln area will likely see downpours of rain, some thunder and lightning, and a potential for some damaging winds. He says the potential for hail and tornados, while not zero, is relatively low.

“The best chance for thunderstorms is right in the middle of the night, so it could shake you out of bed with a few boomers,” said Franks.

Tuesday evening will also carry a chance of storms, but things will heat up by the weekend.

“Should be the warmest temps we felt in Lincoln and eastern Nebraska this year. The heat index will be up near 100, maybe even climbing a couple degrees above 100 degrees for the heat index. A lot of places will be mid-90s for high temperatures. So the combination of heat and humidity, it’ll definitely be the warmest from what we’ve seen so far this year,” Franks said.
