Federal immigration agents raided a South Omaha food plant Tuesday in what’s being called Nebraska’s largest workplace enforcement action since the Trump presidency.
Nebraska Examiner reports nearly 100 suspected undocumented workers were detained at the ‘Glenn Valley Foods’ facility, sparking a response from numerous elected officials and community leaders.
Family members effected by the raid gathered outside the facility, reportedly shouting at law enforcement and briefly trying halt vehicles from moving.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) says the raid is part of an ongoing investigation into unauthorized employment. The Office of 2nd District Congressman Don Bacon issued a statement Tuesday afternoon, saying they did not receive reports on individual enforcement and removal operations, but has “full confidence and expectations that ICE will operate within their legal authority and treat people with respect.”
In addition, Rep. Bacon’s District Director and Director of Outreach went to the ICE facility and gathered that ICE was serving a civil warrant at just the Glenn Valley Foods facility. His office says the warrant was in relation to stolen identities, and that ICE verified that Glen Valley Foods complied “100%” with E-Verify certification and “is a victim in this as well.”
Bacon’s office encourages people who may have family members who have been detained to call ICE at 402-536-4861 (this number is for family members only) or ICE’s toll-free general number at 888-351-4024.
Roger Garcia, chairman of the Douglas County board, abruptly left a county board meeting Tuesday morning, saying “I have to go. I have to try and help.”
The American Civil Liberties Union of Nebraska said the raid was “a direct result of President Trump’s inhumane federal immigration policies, and they will leave lasting damage in our communities.”
“All of us, regardless of immigration status, have certain rights within our country. We are working closely with partners to understand the extent of ICE’s actions today, and we will do everything we can to hold officials accountable for any violations of these workers’ rights. To those affected: we see you and we want you to know that we will never stop working to protect Nebraska’s immigrant families. What is happening in Nebraska today shows exactly why we urgently need immigration reform that balances humane border management with a pathway to citizenship for our longtime immigrant neighbors,” said ACLU-NE Executive Director Mindy Rush Chipman in a statement.
“Today’s drastic and sweeping enforcement of long-outdated laws is deeply contrary to Nebraska’s values of dignity, fairness, respect, and justice,” said Nebraska Appleseed Executive Director Becky Gould in response to the raids. “Harsh immigration enforcement against everyday working Nebraskans – who are part of keeping local restaurants, health care, agriculture, construction, aging care, and other systems and services running – is detrimental to our state. It destabilizes our communities, damages our economy, and more importantly, spreads unnecessary and toxic fear.”
The Omaha-based Center for Immigrant and Refugee Advancement (CIRA) said on social media, “If you know an individual who is currently detained due to the June 10, 2025 raids and does not have legal representation, please contact the CIRA detainee hotline: 402-884-0876
