LES Proposing Mid-Year Rate Hike to Boost Power Capacity

By Chase Porter May 9, 2025 | 1:01 PM

The Lincoln Electric System (LES) is proposing a 4% rate increase as part of a mid-year budget amendment to help meet new reliability standards and avoid financial penalties.

LES says the additional funding would support new power sources, including a hydropower plant and two natural gas turbines. The move comes amid growing demand and stricter regional requirements for electric utilities.

If approved, the change would add about $4 to the average monthly residential bill starting July 1. Commercial customers could see increases between 3% and 5%, depending on usage.

LES Vice President and CFO Emily Koenig acknowledged the financial impact on customers. “We don’t take lightly the decision to propose this mid-year rate increase,” she said. “But reliability remains a top priority, and taking action now helps avoid costlier delays.”

The LES Administrative Board will vote on the proposal May 16. If approved, it would go to the Lincoln City Council for final consideration.
