The LFR Hazardous Device Unit was called out twice on Monday after a pair of hand grenades were found in the same south Lincoln neighborhood. LFR’s MJ Lierman says the first one, a Korean War grenade, was found on the sidewalk in front of a home near 35th and Lake around 10:00 a.m.
The team safely removed it from the area and Lierman says the grenade was determine to be inert and there were no explosive components in it. Lincoln Police say the grenade was stolen out of an unlocked vehicle overnight Sunday into Monday. LPD retrieved the grenade from LFR and returned it to its owner Monday afternoon.
Lierman says the second grenade was found about a mile and a half away at 20th and Worthington. “People were preparing for an estate sale and found a shell of a grenade in some old boxes.” Lierman says despite being found in the same vicinity there is no connection between the two grenades.
She urges anyone who finds a grenade in their home to leave it alone and call 911 right away.
