Lincoln Food Truck Event Series ‘Wild Wednesdays’ Kicks Off April 30

After establishing the city’s first designated food truck zone in 2023, Lincoln will finally unleash the space with the inaugural Wild Wednesdays food truck series, running every other Wednesday from April 30 to October 15.

A fleet of mobile eateries will throw it in park and set up shop at 7th and “K” streets, under Rosa Parks Way near the Haymarket, beginning at 11 a.m. and serving until supplies run out. Vendors for April 30 include:

Attendees will also be entertained with fire eating demonstrations by Luna Nicole of Eclipse Fire Freaks Entertainment.

The origins of this six-month series trace back to 2019, when the city first identified the area as a potential food truck zone within redevelopment plans for the South Haymarket. At the time, with lockdowns still affecting daily life due to the COVID-19 pandemic, local food truck owners strongly urged the city to support the project.

Jennifer Hiatt, a redevelopment planner with the city’s Urban Development Department, tells KLIN News the area had been underutilized. But after repairs to the Rosa Parks overpass and nearby sidewalks — along with the installation of park tables, trash cans, lighting, and a power supply — the space was activated with a kickoff event in August 2023.

“It’s one thing to have food trucks, it’s another thing to have a fun event to go to on Wednesday afternoon,” said Hiatt. “We might as well make it a party.”

Local food truck vendors interested in participating are encouraged to contact jhiatt@lincoln.ne.gov. Hiatt says spots are already starting to fill for the next event on May 14, teasing the debut of “some tacos and grilled cheese” trucks.

“The whole point of having the food truck zone is to make sure that we’re creating one place where food trucks can gather and create a fun event. But importantly, you don’t just have to come to Wild Wednesdays. Anyone can book out the food truck zone with 48 hours notice to the Urban Development and Parking Department,” said Hiatt.
