Maryland’s hard-hitting offense led the Terrapins past Nebraska baseball in a 12-5 win Friday evening at College Park, Md.
The Maryland offense piled up 13 hits, four home runs and a double en route to the series-opening victory over the Cornhuskers.
A Cayden Brumbaugh homer in the first and RBI singles in the second by Will Jesske and Joshua Overbeek gave Nebraska a 3-0 lead. But the Terrapins stormed right back, tying the game with three runs in the second. In the bottom of the third, Jacob Orr homered to give Maryland a 4-3 lead. An RBI single by Hollis Porter gave the Terps an insurance run.
Robbie Bolin drove in a run for Nebraska with an RBI single in the fourth, but Maryland answered in the bottom of the inning when Willson homered. The score stayed 6-4 Maryland until the top of the seventh, Tyler Stone hit an RBI double to cut the Terps lead to one. Maryland removed all doubt in the bottom of the seventh. After a run scored on a passed ball, home runs by Porter and Aden Hill pushed the lead to 10-5. Brayden Martin’s RBI infield single made the lead six, and the Terrapins pushed across one more insurance run in the eighth.
Will Walsh (4-6) took the loss, allowing five earned runs in three innings. Kyle McCoy (4-2) took the win, allowing three earned runs in six innings. Porter led the Maryland offense, hitting 4-for-5 with three RBI and a homer. Overbeek led the Nebraska offense, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
The Huskers will try to even the series at Maryland tomorrow. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m., with pregame coverage beginning at 12:30 p.m. on 105.3 The Bone.
