LPD Tightening The Screws on Street Racers

By Tom Stanton Apr 14, 2025 | 12:02 PM

Starting Tuesday Lincoln Police will begin enforcing an ordinance passed by the City Council last month that allows them to impound vehicles involved in street racing and reckless driving.  “We’ve all seen firsthand the impact of too many drivers speeding, causing noise disturbances, impacting local businesses and, most importantly, endangering public safety,” says Public Information Officer Erika Thomas.

Drivers will get a written notice for the first violation.  Thomas says vehicles will be towed when you receive the written warning, but it can be immediately released.  For any additional violations vehicles can be impounded for ten days.

LPD officers responded to six deaths on ‘O’ Street in the last five years, along with more than 700 nighttime crashes and 800 injury crashes. “This is the culmination of extensive planning between LPD and the City Attorney’s Office, who worked with other key stakeholders,” Thomas says.  “This is a meaningful change that will help protect our community and prevent future tragedies.”
