State Employees Rally to Reduce Hunger

By Tom Stanton Apr 10, 2025 | 1:28 PM

A 40 year tradition continued Thursday outside the Capitol building.  Nebraska’s state employees gathered for the State Campaign Against Hunger.  Carole Nelsen is the Special Programs and Marketing Manager for the Department of Administrative Services and says a “Stuff The Truck” event was held to benefit the Food Bank of Lincoln.

“I think we all know that times are difficult for many people, so this has been a great opportunity for Nebraskans to give back to each other,” Nelsen tells KLIN News.  She says employees from several agencies donated non-perishable food items to help alleviate hunger in Southeast Nebraska, where an estimated 64,500 people are experiencing food insecurity.

“Even from last year to this year we’re seeing in different counties where the need is growing exponentially and people are really suffering and having a hard time making ends meet.  I think it’s a great opportunity.”

At the 2024 Stuff the Truck event, state employees donated more than 5,000 pounds of food. Campaign food donations, paired with financial contributions, helped make more than 46,000 meals possible last year.

In addition to the Stuff the Truck event, the State Campaign Against Hunger invites employees to raise funds and participate in a ‘Can-Struction’ competition—a structure crafted with non-perishable food and personal hygiene items.
