Max Buettenback was 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI as Nebraska baseball topped No. 22 Kansas, 7-5, Tuesday night at Lawrence, Kan. The win boosts the Huskers’ (15-8) record against ranked opponents to 4-2, including three wins over top 25 foes in the last two weeks.
Both teams scored in the first inning. Then in the second, Buettenback sparked the scoring with an RBI double. Will Jesske followed later in the frame with a solo home run. Buettenback added to Nebraska’s lead in the fourth with an RBI double to boost the Cornhuskers’ advantage to 4-1. The Jayhawks (27-7) tallied three runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at four.
But Buettenback gave Nebraska the lead back in the eighth with an RBI single. Cael Frost followed with an RBI single to push the Huskers’ lead to 6-4. Then in the ninth, Cayden Brumbaugh drove in an insurance run with a single. Kansas tallied one in the bottom of the ninth but drew no closer.
Nebraska used 10 different pitchers in the victory, with Pryce Bender (1-0) being awarded the win after throwing a shutout, no-hit seventh. Luke Broderick earned his sixth save despite allowing a run.
