Rutgers salvages final game of series

Rutgers salvaged the final game of its three-game series at Nebraska baseball as the Scarlet Knights (15-17) defeated the Huskers (14-18), 7-5, Sunday at Hawks Field in Lincoln.

After Rutgers scored in the top of the third, Nebraska answered in the bottom of the fourth, as Cael Frost singled through the right side to tie the game. The Scarlet Knights took control of the game with three runs in the top of the fifth. Peyton Bonds drove in a run with a double to right-center. Trevor Cohen drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to push the lead to 3-1. Brennan Hyde followed with a double to left-center to grow the Knights’ lead to 4-1. Tyler Stone responded in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI double to cut the deficit to 4-2.

After Rutgers scored a run in the top of the seventh, RBI singles by Case Sanderson and Stone cut the Scarlet Knights’ lead to 5-4. Rutgers tallied two more runs in the top of the eighth to push the lead to three. An RBI double by Joshua Overbeek in the bottom of the eighth cut the Scarlet Knights’ lead to two, but the Cornhuskers drew no closer.

Quinn Berglin (3-1) earned the win, allowing two earned runs in five innings. Luke Fithian grabbed the save, his second of the year, throwing four innings while allowing two earned runs. Jackson Brockett (0-3) took the loss, allowing three earned runs in 4.1 innings.

Hyde paced the Scarlet Knights’ lineup, hitting 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Stone led the Nebraska offensive attack, going 2-for-4 with two RBI with a double.
