No. 5 Oregon State hit a Hawks Field record eight home runs in beating Nebraska, 16-5 in seven innings, evening the weekend non-conference series at one game each.
The Beavers took the lead in the first with Aiva Arquette homering to left field. A two-run home run by Jacob Krieg pushed the lead to three in the top of the second inning. Gavin Turley hit a solo home run in the third. Two batters later, Wilson Weber hit a roundtripper to push the lead to 5-0 OSU. Nebraska got on the board with a Tyler Stone RBI single in the bottom of the third. In the top of the fourth, however, Oregon State put the game away. After an RBI single by Trent Caraway, Turley hit a grand slam to make it 10-1 Beavers. Easton Talt hit a three-run home run in the fifth to push it to 13-1, then in the sixth, Turley hit a solo home run for his third longball of the day to make it 14-1.
Cael Frost homered in his third straight game for the Cornhuskers with a solo shot to right in the sixth. Devin Nunez followed later in the inning with an RBI single, cutting OSU’s lead to 14-3. AJ Singer wrapped up the homer barrage with a two-run home run in the top of the seventh. Gabe Swansen hit a two-run double in the bottom of the seventh, but the Huskers drew no closer.
Tyler Horn (0-4) took the loss for Nebraska, allowing five earned runs and four home runs in three innings. Dax Whitney (3-2) earned the win for Oregon State, holding the Huskers to one earned run in five innings while striking out 11. Turley led the Beavers’ offense, hitting 4-for-4 with six RBI and three home runs. Nunez paced the Huskers, hitting 2-for-5 with an RBI.
Nebraska and Oregon State will square off in the rubber game of the three-game series Sunday at noon at Hawks Field. Pregame coverage begins at 11:30 a.m. on KLIN.
