LFR Crews Battle Grass Fire Near Nebraska State Penitentiary

A vegetation fire near the Nebraska State Penitentiary was brought under control Friday afternoon after rapidly spreading due to dry conditions, according to Lincoln Fire and Rescue (LFR).

Public Information Officer MJ Lierman says the fire started when a stuck vehicle ignited a grassy area off South 14th Street. Workers attempted to extinguish the flames, but shifting conditions caused the fire to spread quickly. Due to the challenging terrain, including wetlands, LFR called for mutual aid from surrounding departments.

With assistance from the Air National Guard, Malcolm, Southwest, and Hickman fire departments, crews were able to contain the fire.

A fire watch will be conducted by the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services throughout the night to ensure no flare-ups. Although the Red Flag Warning is set to expire at 8 p.m., LFR urges the public to remain cautious of fire hazards.
