Evnen Joins Request to Enhance Federal System for Detecting Noncitizen Voters

By Tom Stanton Mar 6, 2025 | 9:17 AM

Nebraska Secretary of State Bob Evnen has joined 20 other secretaries of state to formally request that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security prioritize making improvements to the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements program.  The SAVE program allows secretaries of state to assure that only U.S. citizens are registered to vote.

In the letter sent Feb. 27, the secretaries outlined five proposed improvements to enhance accuracy and efficiency of the verification process. Those suggested improvements include allowing batch verification of citizenship, eliminating state cost for utilizing the program, clarifying guidance on authorized use and increasing the available information stored within the SAVE system.

“The goal is to ensure that only ballots cast by those who are authorized to vote in our elections are counted,”  Evnen says. “With these improvements, the SAVE program would be a critical tool used to confirm the citizenship status of those who are registered to vote in Nebraska.”
