The Nebraska State Parol says troopers responded to over 300 weather-related traffic incidents during the blizzard that began Tuesday afternoon. Patrol spokesman Cody Thomas says tragically one crash near Grand Island left two people dead.
Thomas says around 4:00 p.m. a Chevrolet Trailblazer was traveling westbound on Interstate 80 when it lost control, crossed the median, and struck an eastbound semi. The driver and passenger of the Chevrolet, 25-year-old Emelin Ortega Rodas of Lexington and 62-year-old Daniel Ortega Marroquin of Lexington, were pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the semi was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Severe winter weather was a factor in the crash according to Thomas and the crash remains under investigation Overall, troopers have responded to 28 crashes and performed over 300 motorist assists since the storm started.
Thomas says additional troopers were called out to help with responses Tuesday evening. As roadways open throughout central and eastern Nebraska, NSP advises all travelers to exercise caution while driving. Many slick spots remain, and strong winds today have the potential of blowing snow and affecting visibility.
