Huskers cruise to first-round win

No. 10 seed Nebraska women’s basketball cruised to an 84-60 win over No. 15 seed Rutgers Wednesday night in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament in Indianapolis. The Huskers are set to take on No. 7 seed Illinois Thursday in the quarterfinal round.

Alexis Markowski tallied her school record 51st career double-double to lead Nebraska with 19 points and 10 rebounds. She also moved into seventh in school history in career scoring. Amiah Hargrove came off the bench to score 13, while Alberte Rimdal added 12 points and eight assists and Britt Prince scored 10 points in her first Big Ten tournament game. The Scarlet Knights were led by Destiny Adams 25 points and 10 rebounds, while Awa Sidibe and Mya Petticord tallied 11 each.

The Cornhuskers scored the first six points of the game. The Scarlet Knights erased Nebraska’s lead and took a 9-8 advantage that lasted all of 19 seconds. The game was tied at 11 with 2:47 to go before the Huskers dashed out to an 11-0 run. Rutgers hit a basket in the waning seconds of the quarter to cut the NU lead to 22-13.

Neither team hit a field goal for the first 3:33 of the second quarter. Petra Bozan hit a three-pointer to push Nebraska’s lead to 17, and the Huskers took a 39-24 lead into the halftime locker room. Nebraska’s lead stayed in the same range for most of the third quarter until an 8-0 run in the final 2:26 of the quarter removed most of the drama from the contest.

Nebraska advances to the Big Ten quarterfinals to face No. 7 seed Illinois at approximately 5:30 p.m. Thursday. The Fighting Illini beat the Huskers in Champaign on Feb. 16, 77-68.
