Lincoln Police have provided an update on a case last week where a woman told police she was slashed with a knife by a man as she took out the trash near 28th and J Streets.  The 29-year-old woman initially told police she didn’t know the man who attacked her.

She told police the man came up to her with a pocketknife and demanded money.  Investigators ultimately determined the woman had actually been assaulted by a man she knows.  Police arrested 32-year-old Caleb Phillips on warrants when police responded to a domestic disturbance call two nights later.

“After further investigation into the assault, which included identifying and interviewing a witness, investigators cited and lodged Phillips at the Lancaster County Jail on additional charges,” says LPD Public Information Officer Erika Thomas.

Phillips is now charged with 2nd degree domestic assault, use of a weapon to commit a felony and possession of a deadly weapon by a prohibited person.  “Domestic violence is a complex and personal experience, filled with emotional, physical and psychological challenges that can make it difficult for survivors to seek help,” Thomas says. “Every situation is unique and nuanced and navigating the path to safety and healing can be overwhelming.”

If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence Thomas encourages you to reach out. “Our Victim Assistance Unit is here to provide guidance, resources and support, along with our dedicated community partners, Voices of Hope, Friendship Home and others,” Thomas says.
