Earlier this week two fishermen fell through the ice at Holmes Lake and were able to safely get themselves out of the water. LFR Battalion Chief Mark Majors says with the warming temperatures he is urging everyone to be extra careful on the ice.

“This is kind of a dangerous time as spring starts to come in and we have these cold nights, but then we get the warmer days and  a lot of that ice has really started to thin out,” Majors says.  “So even though one spot that you’re at right now might be 4-8 inches of ice you may walk ten feet and find out it’s only one inch thick.”

Fishermen are urged to bring an ice pick, a foam life jacket and a drill and tape measure to gauge the ice thickness.  It’s also recommended that anglers take ice cleats and a rope and bring a buddy in case there is trouble and 911 needs to be called.
