Earlier this week 29-year-old Michael Reis of Omaha became the first person in the state to receive a life sentence for distributing fentanyl resulting in a death. Emily Murray is with the DEA in Omaha and says a four-year-old boy ate half of a fentanyl laced pill that was sold to the child’s mother by Reis in 2022.
“He came across the pill and he did what any other toddler would do. He put it right into his mouth and, unfortunately, it was a lethal dose.” The boy was taken to an Omaha hospital where he died. Murray says this case underscores just how seriously everyone is taking fentanyl in the state and at the national level.
“We hope this will be a wake up call to everyone,” Murray says. “A life sentence is no joke. When you look at someone as young as 29-years-old that is a good long time to be spending in jail and reflecting on what you’ve done.”
There is no parole in the federal system.
