With the arrival of spring-like temperatures more motorcycles are hitting the road and LPD IS urging both riders and drivers to remain vigilant and prioritize safety. “In Lincoln, speed remains the leading factor in fatal motorcycle crashes.,” says Public Information officer Erika Thomas.
“Motorcycles are already harder for drivers to see, and high speeds make it even more difficult for drivers to accurately judge their approach. Excessive speed not only increases the
severity of a crash but also reduces the reaction time for everyone on the road.”
Thomas says for motorcycles slow down, stay visible and avoid weaving in an out of traffic. “This is both dangerous and illegal. We have even seen low-speed fatal crashes caused by this behavior.”
As for drivers, Thomas says never assume a motorcycle’s speed and take an extra moment to assess the situation before turning or changing lanes.
“Our brains default to assuming vehicles are traveling at the speed limit. Actively think about approaching motorcycles and their potential speed.” She also advises drivers to double-check before making left turns. There were two deadly motorcycle crashes in Lincoln in 2024, one caused by excessive speed and another where a driver was charged with motor vehicle homicide after failing to yield.
“These tragedies serve as a reminder that a moment of caution can mean the difference between life and death,” Thomas says. LPD says if you’re under 21, helmets are required in Nebraska. If you’re over 21, wear eye protection and complete a safety course. Motorcyclists can legally ride without one but LPD always recommend swearing a USDOT-certified helmet for safety.
