Matt Talbot and Outreach has opened a warming center and will be extending their hours to accommodate anyone in need of a warm place to go. An Extreme Cold Warning will be in effect from 9:00 Wednesday night to 9:00 Thursday morning.
Temperatures are expected to plunge to 15 below zero overnight. With the wind chills, it will feel like 30 below. Matt Talbot Executive Director Alynn Sampson tells KLIN News they will be open until 10:00 Wednesday night
The community kitchen and outreach center for people experiencing homelessness and poverty usually closes after the dinner service ends at 6:30 pm, but will stay open to provide additional safe shelter for homeless individuals who plan to sleep in their cars or outside.
“We are a day shelter and not set up to provide overnight shelter,” Sampson says. “But under these dangerous conditions, we feel we must extend our hours to allow guests who aren’t going to the emergency shelter to remain inside as long as possible.”
Matt Talbot will open their doors on Thursday at 6 am rather than the usual opening time of 8:30 am.
