The Lincoln Police Department has released an outline of an 80-minute crime spree Sunday afternoon that left one man dead and two others injured. Captain Ben Miller says 34-year-old Philmoon Kuku and another person were walking near 13th and ‘E’ Street just before noon Sunday when 41-year-old Timothy Washington drove up in a Chevy Impala and shot Kuku in the chest during an argument.
Washington fled the scene and Kuku was taken to the hospital where he died. Miller says less than an hour later Washington was involved in a hit-and-run crash with a Toyota Highlander at 27th and Y streets. Witnesses told police that the driver got out and walked away from the scene.
“Very soon after, officers received a report of a stabbing near 28th and ‘Y’ Street, Miller says. “The victim, a 40-year-old man, was located outside his apartment building with stab wounds to his neck and chest.” Miller says the victim told police Washington came into his apartment and accused him of owing him money in a case of mistaken identity. He was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Miller says a short time later Washington stole the white Highlander that he had previously hit with his Impala. “We’re very thankful that he did allow the occupants to remove their infant who was still inside the vehicle.” About 10 minutes later Miller says officers were sent to the area of 48th Street and Madison Avenue where Washington struck a 40-year-old man with the stolen vehicle.
“After he struck the person once, he attempted to strike them a second time in the yard where they had retreated.” Miller says Washington also struck two other vehicles as he left. About two minutes later witnesses saw Washington take out a knife and start beating on windows of a nearby apartment complex.
Miller says Washington then drove to the Casey’s at Leighton Avenue and North Cotner Boulevard and stole a Chevy Tahoe. He is accused of hitting two other vehicles while fleeing in the stolen vehicle. After hitting several other vehicles, police began to pursue Washington in the stolen Tahoe near 56th and Adams. “The pursuit continues until he strikes a tree and light pole near 8th and Benton,” Miller says.
“After he wrecked, Washington then fled on foot, but was quickly taken into custody. Washington was arrested for first-degree murder and use of a weapon to commit a felony. Additional charges are forthcoming.
