Raelin Chaffin threw a five-hit shutout to lead No. 24 Mississippi State to a 3-0 win over No. 19 Nebraska Sunday at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Clearwater, Fla. Chaffin was tough throughout, but especially when the Huskers (3-2) had a scoring chance. Nebraska was 0-for-10 with runners on base and 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position for the game.
Meanwhile, the Bulldogs (4-1) took advantage of their scoring opportunity in the second inning. With two out and the bases loaded, Sierra Sacco laced a three-run double to clear the bases and give MSU a three-run lead that would stand the rest of the game.
Kylee Magee (1-1) took the loss, allowing those three runs in two innings pitched. Emmerson Cope came out of the bullpen and threw three shutout innings, while Hannah Camenzind pitched the sixth and didn’t allow a run. Cope and Olivia DiNardo paced the Nebraska offense with two hits each.
Nebraska now prepares to head to Las Cruces, N.M., for the Troy Cox Classic. The Huskers take on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Friday at 10 a.m., then host school New Mexico State at 3 p.m. NU will play twice more on Saturday and a single game against Montana on Sunday.
