Nebraska State Troopers arrested three people after finding large amounts of methamphetamine and marijuana in separate traffic stops on Interstate 80. Around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday a trooper stopped a Kia Forte on eastbound I-80 near North Platte.
Patrol spokesman Cody Thomas says during the traffic stop the trooper detected the odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. A search revealed several large packages of suspected methamphetamine inside suitcases in the trunk of the vehicle. The total weight of the meth was 110 pounds. Troopers also located a small amount of marijuana, suspected drug money and four counterfeit $100 bills.
27-year-old Yafet Kidane Berhe and 33-year-old Douglas Cameron of Toronto, Canada, were arrested for possession of methamphetamine, possession with intent to deliver, possession of money for a controlled substance and possession of less than an ounce of marijuana. Both men were lodged in Lincoln County Jail in North Platte.
Thomas says on Thursday around 11:30 a.m. a trooper performed a traffic stop on a Volkswagen Jetta at it was traveling eastbound on I-80 near Overton. During the traffic stop, the trooper detected the odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. Troopers searched the vehicle and located 85 pounds of marijuana concealed in trash bags in the trunk.
Troopers also located a handgun. The driver, 31-year-old Matthew Maly of Council Bluffs, Iowa, was arrested for possession of more than a pounds of marijuana, possession with intent to deliver, possession of a firearm during a drug violation, no driver’s license and possession of drug paraphernalia.
He was booked into the Dawson County Jail.
