As temperatures drop, and in observance of February as Spay/Neuter Awareness Month, Lincoln Animal Control (LAC) is reminding residents to spay and neuter their pets.

There are numerous benefits to spaying or neutering pets. Denise Bollwitt, LAC Manager, says pets will be calmer, more obedient and affectionate, and will get along better with other pets. They will be less likely to roam. Sterilizing procedures also make pets less susceptible to certain types of cancer.

Pet owners can save money on yearly pet licensing fees if their pets are sterilized. LAC offers financial assistance to pet owners with limited incomes for part of the cost of spay/neuter services. Lincoln Animal Control helped 76 pet owners spay or neuter their pets through its assistance program in fiscal year 2023-2024.

“We encourage residents to spay or neuter their pets. It helps control overpopulation and may also prevent medical and behavioral issues, allowing pets to lead longer, healthier and happier lives,” said Bollwitt.
