On a 7-0 vote Monday afternoon the Lincoln City Council approved a proposed “Lincoln on the Move” ballot initiative. Councilwoman Sandra Washington believes it’s important to renew the current sales tax used for street improvements.
“Not only does it improve the comfortability of driving and it makes it easier for public safety, but it also helps to grow our community.” The initiative was first approved by voters in 2019.
Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird said at a news conference last month that the continuation of the quarter-cent sales tax would generate an estimated $18 million annually for a projected total of $144 million for transportation infrastructure over eight years.
Voters will have their say on the issue on April 8. If passed, the quarter-cent sales tax will continue through September 30, 2033.
