The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office says a convicted felon who was in the country illegally will be deported. Investigators say Natanael Topete-Perez was involved with a number of construction site thefts over the past year in the Omaha area.
Despite overstaying his Visa and no longer being in the country legally, the sheriff’s department says ICE was prevented from detaining him after any of his court proceedings by the previous administration. He was convicted and found guilty of felony theft by receiving for a construction site theft.
The sheriff’s department says on Monday Topete-Perez made the bold move of contacting DCSO to request his tools back. “Specifically, the tools that DCSO could not prove were stolen, but were recovered with multiple other confirmed stolen tools,” the department said in a Facebook post.
“Instead of getting his tools, he was presented with ICE agents who took him into custody for deportation processing.” The Douglas County Sheriff’s Department says it is committed to protecting all innocent people in the county and will cooperate with federal authorities to ensure that criminals are removed from our community.
