Makeshift Explosive Device Found on South Lincoln Trail

By Tom Stanton Jan 10, 2025 | 12:39 PM

LPD is investigating a case of arson on a bike trail. Public Information Officer Erika Thomas says around 11:30 Thursday night LFR responded to the trail near 33rd and Sheridan.  “A metal can and paper had been set on fire under a tree, causing a small fire in the grass,” Thomas says.  “The can had erupted and scattered across the trail.”

Thomas says after talking with a witness they found a second scene on the bike trail near 27th and Nebraska Parkway where a plastic bottle stuffed with work gloves and several live rounds of ammo had been on fire.

The witness put out the fire with a jacket.  “An older model iPhone was located across from the makeshift explosive device,” Thomas says.  “A detonation appeared to have occurred, but no damage was done other than to the device itself.”

Thomas reminds everyone that if you see something, say something. “If you see any object or device that appears suspicious, do not approach it and call the authorities to investigate at 402-441-6000 or 911 in an emergency.”
