New statistics from the Lincoln Police Department show that officers took more than 3,200 stolen vehicle reports between 2020 and 2024.  Public Information Officer Erika Thomas says that averages to 640 thefts a year.

“LPD recovers more than 95 percent of them and on average, it takes officers about 12 days to find and return them to their owners.”  Thomas says.  Police say a lot of these vehicles are left unlocked and have the keys left inside.

She has some advice to prevent you from becoming a statistic.  “We always want to remind drivers to lock their vehicles, roll up the windows, take the keys with you and don’t leave your car unattended and running, even if it is in your driveway.

She also advises residents to park in well-lit areas and don’t leave guns inside.
