Volunteers Needed for ‘Snow Angels’ Program

By Chase Porter Feb 11, 2025 | 5:00 PM

The City of Lincoln is calling on “snow removal enthusiasts” to lend a hand this season to their neighbors who need assistance clearing snow from sidewalks.

Since 2012, the Snow Angels Program has helped community members, particularly older adults and individuals with disabilities who struggle to clear snow, stay safe and mobile during winter storms and the snow fall season.

City ordinance requires property owners to clear snow and ice from sidewalks by 9 a.m. the day following the end of a snowstorm. Tim Byrne, LTU Maintenance Operations and Fleet Services Manager, said that many longtime volunteers have aged out of the program and are no longer able to assist.

“As some of our dedicated volunteers retire from snow removal, it is crucial that we recruit new volunteers to keep the program running. It is a simple, yet meaningful way to give back to your neighbors,” Byrne said.

Volunteers may sign up at lincoln.ne.gov/SnowAngels. Participants can choose their own schedule and are not required to have a snow blower. Those interested in receiving snow removal assistance should view the map of volunteers at lincoln.ne.gov/SnowAngels.
