The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has confirmed the first pediatric influenza-related death in Nebraska this season.
There have been two flu-related deaths in Nebraska this season. Nationally, there have been two additional pediatric flu-related deaths this season according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Antiviral drugs like oseltamivir, commonly known as Tamiflu, should be used as early as possible in people with flu-like illnesses. For those who are not sick, common preventive measures along with flu vaccines can help prevent flu and other winter illnesses. Tamiflu can safely treat symptoms in infants as young as two weeks old.
To protect yourself and loved ones from the flu, avoid close contact with individuals who are sick. If you are sick, limit your contact with others as much as possible. While the flu can make anyone sick, certain people are at greater risk for serious complications.
