8,600 Suspected Fentanyl Pills Thrown From Van During I-80 Pursuit

The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Department has released new details following a dangerous, high speed pursuit Tuesday afternoon between Lincoln and Omaha.  Captain John Vik says during the chase pills inside of plastic bags were tossed out of the vehicle as speeds reached 100 miles per hour.

“We’ve recovered approximately 8,600 pills, which we believe to be illicit fentanyl.”  Vik says the pills had a net weight of about two pounds.  “This was an extremely dangerous amount of suspected narcotics that were recovered by our officers at the scene.”

Vik says a deadly dose of fentanyl is the size of a couple of grains of sand.  The pursuit started on I-80 near Waverly and ended near the Omaha National Cemetery in Papillion.  Four people from Illinois were arrested.  A passenger in the van ended up getting into the driver’s seat and taking off.

Vik says right now it’s not known where they were coming from or what their destination was.
