Howard L. Hawks, former University of Nebraska Regent and business leader, died Friday. He was 89.
In 1987, Hawks co-founded the Omaha-based energy company Tenaska Inc, which has now grown into an $18 billion company. He was first elected regent in 2002 at age 67, followed by reelections in 2008 and 2014, twice serving as chairman.
An alumnus of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Business and the University of Nebraska at Omaha MBA program, Hawks’ philanthropy for landed him the namesake of the College Of Business Howard L. Hawks Hall, the Hawks Championship Center and Hawks Field at Haymarket Park.
Several Nebraska politicians and University leaders have shared their condolences for the Hawks family.

His generosity, commitment to education and dedication to building stronger communities have left an indelible mark on our institution. My amazing friendship with Howard and Rhonda has been of profound impact and deeply appreciated. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Rhonda and the entire Hawks family,” said Jeffrey P. Gold, University of Nebraska President.
“Suzanne and I join Nebraskans mourning the loss of Howard Hawks. Howard was an extraordinary business leader, a servant of our university system and the people of our state, and a dedicated philanthropist who reinvested his blessings back into his community at every turn. I am deeply grateful for the years I served alongside Howard on the Board of Regents. Like many others, I learned so much from his wisdom and leadership. Suzanne and I extend our prayers and condolences to Rhonda and the entire Hawks family,” said Governor Jim Pillen.

Howard has impacted Nebraska in so many ways, from his generous philanthropic support to his service on the Board of Regents and as one of the most loyal Husker fans you could find. Howard’s impact at the University of Nebraska will be felt for generations to come. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and all who knew and loved Howard,” said Troy Dannen, University of Nebraska Director of Athletics.
