32-year-old Brittany Cook was sentenced to 105 years to life in prison on Thursday for her role in the abuse and death of her 22-month-old son, Rudy Jr., in March 2023.

KLIN media partner 1011 Now reports, according to district court documents, Cook received: 70 years to life in count one of intentional child abuse resulting in death; 20 to 25 years on count two of intentional child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury; five to ten years on count three of possession with intent to deliver.

On March 12, 2023, Lincoln Police responded to St. Elizabeth Hospital on the report of a child being seen for injuries consistent with abuse. The boy was found to have obvious signs of injury and transported to Children’s Hospital in Omaha for a higher level of care.

Cook’s boyfriend, 32-year-old Joshua Tackett, was arrested in March 2023 and convicted in July on charges of child abuse causing death and drug distribution near a school.

“We extend our condolences to the family of the victim and ask the public to respect their privacy as they grieve the loss of their loved one,” LPD said in a statement.

Rudy Jr. was taken to CHI St. Elizabeth with severe injuries, including bruises, a broken leg, and signs of abuse. He was later transferred to Children’s Hospital in Omaha, where he died on March 17. Cook had initially claimed she found her son unresponsive after a nap.
