Giraffe Calf Born at Lincoln Children’s Zoo

By Tom Stanton Nov 15, 2024 | 1:15 PM

There is a new resident at the Lincoln Children’s Zoo.  Director of Communications Erin Lenz says male giraffe calf was born at the Zoo on November 3rd to second-time mom, Allie, and third-time dad, Joey.

“The new calf stood within the first hour of birth and measured just under 6 feet tall and 130 pounds,” Lenz says.  “The calf has officially made introductions with the rest of the herd here at the Zoo, and both mom and calf are doing well.”

The name of the calf will be announced at a later date.  Zoo visitors can meet the giraffe calf beginning this Sunday at 10 a.m. at the indoor giraffe barn.  Giraffes are listed as vulnerable on the International Union Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species, meaning they face a high risk of extinction in the wild.
