Back for it’s 16th year, the YMCA of Lincoln’s annual Turkey Trot running event is set to fill downtown Lincoln’s Railyard with runners of all ages on Thanksgiving morning, November 28th.
The Turkey Trot will host a 1-mile Fun Run/Walk at 8 a.m. — ideal for participants of all fitness levels — and a 5K race at 8:30 a.m. for those who like their runs with a competitive flair. Additionally, a free Tot Trot will be offered to youth ages five and under beginning at 7:45 a.m.
“Thanksgiving morning is the biggest running day across the nation,” said Karla Hudson, Associate Executive Director of the Cooper YMCA and Turkey Trot Director. “We want to encourage our community to try and stay as active as possible during the holiday season, with a lot of opportunities to have a lot more extra food. Anyway we can bring some activity and show that there’s more to Thanksgiving than just the feasting is important.”
Hudson expects the Railyard to be packed with runners. 2023 was the Turkey Trot’s first year in downtown, and drew about 1,800 people. This year, Hudson is projecting over 2000.
Registration is open through November 27 at YMCALincoln.org/turkeytrot24, however last-minute sign-ups will be accepted through Thanksgiving morning. Race fees are $20 per person for the 1-mile Fun Run/Walk, $35 per person for the 5K, or $72 for a family (up to five members) to join the Fun Run/Walk either in person or virtually. Participants who register by November 24 will receive a Turkey Trot t-shirt.
Proceeds from the Trot will support the YMCA’s Open Doors Financial Assistance program, which offers Y services at reduced fees to youth, families, and seniors.
The race will also host a drive for non-perishable food items and hygiene products during packet pickup and on race day for the Food Bank of Lincoln. Barrels will be available to drop off any items at the Cooper Y (packet pickup) and in the Railyard (race day).
