Like it or not, winter weather will be here before we know it and LPD Public Information Officer Erika Thomas says now is the time to make sure your vehicle is ready to go when the snow flies. “Check the tread and replace tires as needed, check fluids, check wipers and replace as needed and check the car battery and headlights and brake lights.”

Thomas also stresses the importance of a winter car kit.  “Include an ice scraper, shovel, emergency kit, snow melt or cat litter for traction,
hat, gloves, coats, blankets and snacks in the car.”

She says use that ice scraper to clear your windshield and mirrors. “It will help with your field of view which will keep you and others on the roads safe. This also prevents other
cars from getting hit with chunks of ice and hardened snow.”

In addition, be sure to check your gas tank often and keep it filled in case you get stuck.  Response time by first responders may take a little longer due to winter road conditions, so being prepared with the proper equipment will help keep everyone involved safe.
