The number of pertussis cases, also known as whooping cough, continues to climb in Nebraska.  Last week the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services reported 51 cases in the state, up from the previously reported 35 cases in the weeks prior.

“These climbing numbers are particularly concerning because in the last few years, pertussis cases have been almost nonexistent,” said Dr. Renuga Vivekanandan, CHI Infectious Disease Physician.

“We as a community can work together to do our part to prevent further illness, which starts with vaccination and seeing your provider when you’re sick.”  Pertussis is a respiratory illness caused by a type of bacteria.

It’s contagious and is spread through coughing, sneezing or respiratory droplets.  Young babies, elderly individuals or immunocompromised persons are at a higher risk for developing serious infection.

Many of the reported cases have been among school-aged children. While they may not be severe cases, Dr. Vivekanandan says the risk of passing the illness on to others is cause for concern.  She says if you are sick it’s best to make an appointment with your doctor to get checked out.
