Field Fire Burns Nearly 300 Acres of Farmland

By Tom Stanton Oct 14, 2024 | 11:56 AM

15 fire departments battled a wildfire for more than three hours Sunday afternoon in a cornfield near 84th and Branched Oak Road. LSO Chief Deputy Ben Houchin says a bearing on a combine overheated, which sparked the field fire.

“The farmer was able to remove the combine from the field without damage.”  Houchin says due to the dry conditions and wind the fire quickly spread and burned about 250-300 acres of standing and cut fields.

In addition to the many firefighters, Houchin says several farmers who used tractors and discs to help top the fire from spreading.   He says deputies and state troopers went to several homes to alert residents.

No one was hurt and no buildings damaged.
