Truck Fire Closes Down I-80 Near Waverly

By Chase Porter Oct 14, 2024 | 4:49 PM

A truck carrying hazardous materials caught fire Monday afternoon, closing part of I-80 east of Waverly.

Both directions of I-80 are shut down between mile marker 406 near Lincoln and Exit 420 near Ashland, according to Nebraska 511.

The Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) is telling drivers to expect delays in the area while emergency crews work to tame the fire, which spread to grass close by. Local fire departments were dispatched to the scene after the fire broke out at 3:24 p.m.

NSP issued an update, saying the Hazmat tanker doesn’t appear to be affected by the fire. Crews are still in clean-up mode and I-80 remains closed for both directions in the area between MM 420 and MM 405, just east of Lincoln.

Troopers are performing rolling roadblocks to slow traffic coming up to the closure and will get traffic moving again as soon as the area is clear.
