The Broadway stage adaption of the beloved 80’s sci-fi classic Back to the Future: The Musical will open it’s 6-day stint in Lincoln tonight at the Lied Center for Performing Arts.
Lincoln is among the first few cities to see the stage spectacle on this tour, even before destination’s like Los Angeles and New York, as apart of the Lied’s 2024-2025 Glenn Korff Broadway Series. Staring Tuesday, October 8 through Sunday, October 13, the 2022 Olivier Award-winning musical will play 8 performances.
“Back to the Future is a really unique musical because people who don’t usually see musicals or Broadway love this show. More people who have never seen a Broadway show are purchasing tickets to back to the future than just about anything out there because the movie is so beloved, and they really went all out to transfer the movie to the stage,” said Lauren Silverman Durban, the Lied’s Communications Manager.
As told by Durban, the original Back to the Future creators Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis got the idea to adapt the first film in the franchise into a musical after repeated asks from fans about a potential forth installment. Gale had the view that fans of the franchise didn’t actually want Back to the Future 4, instead, fans want to recapture the magic of seeing the original movie for the first time. Thus, leaning into iconic score pieces from the franchise like the Huey Lewis penned The Power of Love or Marty McFly’s performance of Johnny B. Goode, the musical version was born.
More than a dose of nostalgia, Durban says the play is spectacle in terms of stagecraft and technology. A real DeLorean is incorporated in the set design.
Tickets are still available for all 8 performances, says Durban. For more information, go to liedcenter.org, call (402) 472-4747, or visit the Lied Center box office.
