Two massive 35-foot pink ribbons have been painted on the lawn of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church near 84th and Pioneers in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month.

Chip Shield is a member of the congregation and a group of “middle aged guys who get in the middle of thing” he’s dubbed “The Middlemen,” who took inspiration from a church in Kearney, Nebraska who did something similar to commemorate the month. The Kearney church crafted large ribbons in their lawn using hundreds of small, pink yard flags.

“We were kind of dreaming as to what we could do for breast cancer awareness month, and somebody had the idea to paint some ribbons out there and we went ahead with it,” Shield said.

St. Mark’s is also welcoming the community to add a personal dedication to the giant painted ribbons. Visitors are welcome to write the name of a survivor or a lost loved one to breast cancer on a yard flag, to be planted by the ribbons through the month of October.

Shield says the ribbons were painted by an all male crew to surprise the women who attend the church. The church is also raising money for the Heartland Cancer Foundation.
